With summer quickly coming to an end, our summer reading challenge is also supposed to be ending but we’re not really done yet. Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians series is 5 whole books, which is a serious challenge! However, dare I say that the kids are enjoying the 30 minutes of reading they do every day. Make sure you check out post 1 and 2 in our summer reading challenge series to know how we got to where we are now.

It has gotten to the point where we no longer have to remind the kids to read as it’s now a habit and I hope they continue with this their whole life. I’ve loved how different this series is from most of the things they have read before. They have mainly read really primary books and this was a great segue into tween lit. They have learned so much about Greek gods and are constantly asking for definitions of new words. I love that they are pushing themselves beyond their usual comfort level with the Percy Jackson series.

Both Darius and Emma are reading book 3, The Titan’s Curse, this month. My daughter is still the faster reader out of the two, but I think my son is the more invested reader. He will read more than needed just so he can finish the chapter or find out what happens next.

We will continue to read these books and at the pace we are on, I think it will probably take us up to the end of the year until we can start a new adventure. But since the kids are liking this one so much, I think it’s fair to say that by the time we’re done with the Percy Jackson series, we will be checking out some of the other titles from Rick Riordan.

We will continue to read the series and move our way through the other titles by Rick because we are now invested. Have you ever found a series like that, that keeps you coming back for more?

My daughter went so crazy for the Maximum Ride series that we spent a week searching for the books in every thrift store here and in Vernon, buying most that way but some from Chapters as you have to read them in order. She read for hours every day until she’d read them all. Over the years she’s read a few of them over and over again, too. She’s never again found a book or series that held her like those did.

This series reminds me of when the Harry Potter series came out and inspired a generation of readers.

Reading is something that expands one’s mind. It is a great habit to start young.

What a great idea – of course summer is over now but I’ve got to do something to encourage more reading at home!

I’ve read the Percy Jackson & the Olympians and found it enjoyable, then passed the books onto my granddaughter who absolutely loved them. 🙂

We have always fostered reading in the family; its something I have loved since I was a child, so my kiddos were immersed in it from before birth. Percy Jackson and his series is one of their favourite (or was) as smaller kids; Harry Potter is another and later they loved books like David Eddings and JRR Tolkien.

A summer reading challenge turned my niece into a bookworm! It was great!

It often happens this way and reading is such a good habit.
