Summer Reading Challenge – Percy Jackson & the Olympians series

Summer Reading Challenge – Percy Jackson & the Olympians series
This post is in partnership with Disney Book Group and is the first in a three-part series. All thoughts are our own.

We are embarking on a summer reading challenge with my two oldest kids this year and first on the agenda is the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series.

I wish I could tell you that both of these kids were vigorous readers and would have this series done in a pinch but that is just not the truth. While my daughter can often be found reading late into the night, I have to remind my son to get his chapter in daily. It’s not that he can’t read or that he finds it hard, but he’s more interested in reading stats on his favourite basketball player on the internet. Since I know just how fulfilling a good book would be, I was eager to sign both of them up for the Percy Jackson Summer Reading challenge.

Why the Percy Jackson & the Olympians Series Is Perfect for Summer

You know that feeling when you finish a book and can’t wait to start the next one in the series? I love that feeling and I always try to buy a book series for my kids because it gives them the option to keep on reading. Percy Jackson & the Olympians series by Rick Riordan comes with 5 books that are interesting for both boys and girls.

They follow 12-year-old Perseus “Percy” Jackson who is a demigod. His mom is mortal Sally Jackson and his dad is Greek god Poseidon. I love that he has ADHD and dyslexia in this series because it makes him more relatable. I need my kids to know that not everyone fits into a cookie cutter mold.

As Percy is threatened with being booted out of boarding school again, he discovers that he  has bigger problems to deal with. His life is suddenly occupied with angry mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus. As Percy and his friends try to solve the mystery of who stole Zeus’ lightning bolt Percy must also deal with the father who abandoned him, all while solving riddles and unravelling treacheries.

Our Progress So Far

The kids have started their first book in the series, “The Lightning Thief,” and although my daughter has made more progress, they are both on their way. We still have around 7  weeks left of school so the kids seem to be cramming in a lot of last minute projects and they each had a book report sprung on them this month. Once their school projects finish, we are moving into our routine of reading at least one chapter a day. This has to be done before any TV or video games but we can’t start this until their schoolwork eases up.

I’ve also given the kids a cash incentive if they finish the series before the summer is over. They will get $50 for finishing and I hope they’ll use it to buy some more books. For more information on the Percy Jackson series and to purchase for your own kids, head on over to ReadRiordan.com.
