Who cares?

None of us should! As long as baby was fed it shouldn’t matter how baby got their food, right? Yet there is a stigma in society that needs to stop. Breast feeding may be ideal but not all moms have the opportunity to, the time to, or the want to do it, and that is OK.

I have done all of the above and more. With four kids you can bet I have done everything and tried it all. Some methods worked and some didn’t. Some worked for one kid and not for another. Each kid entailed a tailored feeding routine and just when I had it figured out they would change it up. They still do this and I don’t think it ever ends.

Our Feeding Journey

My first born I knew I was going to formula feed. No questions about it and I pumped to get him the colostrum and other goodies for three months as well. I knew I was not going to breastfeed him so in return when we switched to all formula I was happy and continued to parent.

Emma was born just ten short months after her brother and was fed breastmilk through a tube in her nose in the NICU. I pumped like a champ for her until she came home from the hospital and then I tried to smoothly switch her to formula like her brother. NO CAN DO-she projectile vomited and cried until she was six months old and I figured out she was lactose intolerant. Lactose-free formula for her.

While pregnant with Aria I discovered Pinterest and my world started to spin. Aria was cloth diapered, breast fed, wrapped in organic cloth. I spent hours with this little girl in my arms breast feeding her. Laying in bed looking in each others eyes. I still breastfeed her even though she gets most meals with the rest of us. I find during the night she comes over and feeds by her self. I am enjoying my time with my little girl because our days are numbered.

Cyrus is my newest bundle of joy and I feel as if I should be doing more of everything with him yet I am doing it all already. I had every intention of having him breastfed like Aria with the occasional supplemented bottle but it just hasn’t worked out that way. He goes seamlessly from boob to bottle and back again. During the day he gets more bottles but during the night he is a boob man. His feedings during the day have been delegated throughout our family but it has helped them all bond with our guy. Hes not complaining though so we will continue on our feeding journey for however long is needed.

What I have learned through the past 8 years (almost) is that no matter what way I fed my kids they all survived. They all ate Cheerios off of the floor, they all had breast milk, they all have eaten McDonalds fries. Now during naps and after the kids have gone to bed I find myself getting comfortable on the couch and pumping the kids some bottles. The ten minutes on the couch gives me a chance to unwind and regroup. Most nights I welcome the chance to sit back and breathe.

I have never had problems with pumping hurting but I know plenty of women who did. Simulating letdown and milk flow are the massaging petals in the breast cushion on the pump.

Before I got pregnant, I was going to have a natural birth, cloth diapers and breastfeed. Then I had triplets.

Since they were born at 30 weeks, they could’t suckle so I pumped with the plan to get them on the breast. Then I lost my son.

Instead of stressing about trying to get them on the breast, I exclusively breastfed for 17 months. I am so happy that I could for me, for them and for the connection to the son I lost.

I like that your post reminds people that it’s okay to be different and do things “their way”. Most of us are just trying our best even when life has other plans.

P.S. I actually have pictures of my kids eating cheerios off the floor.

My Fave feature is the gentle stimulation mode , as my daughter inlaw says it hurts when she pumps with the one she has and its second hand so probably doesn’t work as well as it should 🙂 i’m sure she would love the gentle stimulation mode for sure 🙂

Feed the baby – that’s my philosophy! There’s just so much stigma no matter what you do, and I hate it. I love to breastfeed, and I’ve been fortunate to be able to do so with both my boys – but it doesn’t make me a better mom than my friend who chooses to formula feed from the get go! This is a beautiful article!

And seriously, I love that you can pump into the sippy cup. Brilliant!
