Pay attention to your personal care ingredients.

It is widely known that many skin and hair care products contain ingredients you want as well as ones you definitely do not want to put on your body. Many contain chemicals that are reported hormone disruptors and can cause unwanted skin reactions. Make time in your schedule to sit down with the products you currently use and read through the ingredient list. Have your smartphone or laptop ready to look up any words you are not familiar with.

It is important to note that some ingredient names might sound harsh, but they may simply be the scientific names for said compounds. Always do your due diligence and educate yourself on what products you use.

Here is a list of personal care items you should prioritize to keep clean for your health.

  • Face and body lotions, creams, and serums.
  • Feminine care products such as tampons and pads.
  • Deodorant and antiperspirant products.
  • Hair care products, including serums, hairspray, relaxers, heat protectants, straighteners, shampoo, and conditioner.
  • Body wash, cleansers, and soaps.
  • Face and body exfoliants and scrubs.
  • Face and body makeup, including lip, eye, and skin products.

Clean more often.

One of the best ways to avoid the need to use harsh chemicals in many areas of your home is to have a cleaning schedule and stick to it. Enlist your partner and kids to help and make it easier and more enjoyable for everyone – especially you.

Start with weekly dusting, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming.

  • Invest in a few microfibre cloths and dusters designed specifically for dusting mementos, blinds, ceiling fans, and baseboards. They are reusable and will last for years. Put on some music and make a party of it, or get in a few cardio steps while you are all moving around. Many of these will serve double duty and can be used to clean windows and mirrors with only water, as well.
  • Use specially-designed microfibre cloths that attach to a dry floor sweeper, or make your own. If you live in an especially dry and dusty area or have pets that shed a lot, try to run the floor sweeper or broom across the hardwood and in non-carpeted areas daily to prevent allergens, dust, and debris from lingering in your home.
  • At the end of the day, when you and your family members are getting ready for bed, use the washcloth that you used to cleanse your face and give it an extra purpose before putting it into a laundry basket. Use it to wipe down the bathroom counter and sink. This little act will prevent toothpaste and other grime from building up on the sink or in the drain over time.
  • Vacuuming may seem like something you can do once in a while or once a week, but your job will be easier, and the house will look and feel cleaner if you run the vacuum more often. This simple action helps remove dust and prevents it from settling onto shelves and the TV. It is an effective way to rid your home of pet hair and help keep it off of your clothing, too.

While there are some areas of the home that will always need something extra to eliminate germs and bacteria, you can do a lot with simple ingredients that you probably already have at home.

Keep your pantry and cleaning closet stocked with these helpful ingredients.

  • Baking Soda
  • White Vinegar
  • Environmentally-Friendly Dish Soap
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Peroxide
  • Lemon Juice
