Winter and You: How to Love the Chilly Season

Some people naturally love Winter. But that’s not the case for most of us. It’s easy to be a fan of those long and warm Spring and Summer days, but when the nights draw in and the temperatures begin to drop, most of us can end up wishing for the swift return of warmer days.

However, given how long winter can last, it’s important that we embrace the season, rather than fight it. In this post, we’ll run through some useful tips that’ll allow you to do just that, right from the comfort of your own home. We’re not promising that winter will become your favorite season, but we’re sure you’ll love it more than before!

Incorporate Atmospheric Lighting

The winter season is all about coziness. For this, most people focus on adding some blankets to their homes. However, there’s a lot of value in investing time and energy to give your home atmospheric lighting, which can have a huge impact on your experience of your property. Low, warm lighting provides a welcome invitation to simply stay inside, away from the dark and chilly outdoors. Check out this article if you need some tips on how to use ambient lighting to create an intimate atmosphere.

Commit to an Early Morning Walk

We’re much less inclined to go outside when it’s cold outside. However, if you stay inside too much, then it’ll be inevitable that you begin to long for the return of spring. This is especially true for those of you who work from home; in that scenario, it can be days before you leave your property, and that can be pretty miserable. The solution? Commit to an early morning walk. Wrap up warm and go for a brisk walk around the block. It’ll put some life in you, wake you up, and make staying inside all day much more enjoyable.

Look Up Warming Recipes

The chilly months provide the perfect opportunity to get into the kitchen and whip up some warming dishes. In the spring and summer months, we’re eager to eat quickly so we can get outside. In winter? We have nowhere to be and nothing to do, so spending a couple of hours in the kitchen is the perfect activity. There’s no shortage of warming winter dishes to make, including chilis, curries, and soups. You may also consider baking cookies or bread, which will provide a tasty treat and make your home smell absolutely delicious.

Load Up Binge-Worthy TV Shows

There are some periods of the year when we feel guilty for sitting on the couch for hours at a time, watching an awesome TV show. The winter period is not one of those times. When it’s oh-so-cold outside, you have the perfect excuse to do nothing other than watch episode after episode of some of the best television series ever created. Looking for some inspiration? Check out this article on the best binge-worthy television shows everyone must see at least once.

And don’t forget about movies, either! Winter is a great time to watch all those award-winning movies you may have missed this year. You can also watch those movies that are too long to watch at any other time of the year, such as the extended version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Invest in Comfortable Clothing

Winter is all about sinking into comfort, so make sure that your wardrobe is full of clothes that’ll allow you to enjoy long hours on the couch. If you’re wearing old sweatpants that are very much past their best, treat yourself to a new pair. You may also consider investing in an ultra-warm dressing gown and slippers.

Make Your Home a Toasty Haven

It’s worthwhile making sure that your home looks the part by incorporating ambient lighting and cozy aesthetic touches. However, what’s most important is that your home feels the part. And by that, we mean ensuring that it’s toasty and warm. Your winter experience will be pretty miserable if you’re continually battling the cold while you’re in your home! It’s worthwhile performing some routine maintenance tasks on your heating system before the chill arrives, and also having the contact details of a boiler, furnace, or heat pump repair company on hand just in case you run into issues. It’s also recommended to order some extra plush blankets; you can never have too many blankets during the winter months.

Non-Digital Family Activities

If you’re not careful, you and your family can spend the whole winter season staring at your devices. It’s easily done! That’s why it’s a good idea to consciously work towards doing some activities that don’t involve a screen. For instance, it can be a lot of fun to spend the evening playing a board game. You could also do some arts and crafts, host your own family plays, or tell stories from the old days. To make the evening extra special, light a few candles and sit on the floor; it’ll be an intimate occasion that you and your family will cherish.

Practice Good Habits

Life can get pretty hectic during the summer months when it feels like we’re always doing something. In the winter, we have the time and space to engage in a quieter side of life. So what will you do with that time? If you do yoga at home, download a meditation app, read, and all around practice good habits, you’ll find that you’re the very best version of yourself once spring finally arrives.

Make All Your Spring and Summer Plans

Finally, you can use the cold weather as an opportunity to make all your spring and summer plans. It might feel like winter will never end, but the blue skies and warm weather will come back eventually. If you struggle with the winter months, then taking the time to make future plans will help to give you something to look forward to. International vacations, camping trips, and road trips require some planning, so now’s the time to get to it!
