Self-Care Day: How Do You Practice Self-Care?

Self-care can really take a beating in the summer months when everything seems to be go, go, go. Some days it’s hard to carve out a few minutes of the day for myself to drink my coffee in peace and others like this morning I have a house where everyone is sleeping in and I can get some work done.

With month eight (where has the time gone) of 2017 about to start I can’t wait to refocus my efforts into making sure I meet my goals for 2017.

Self-Care Day: How do you practice self-care?

Sunday, July 24th is International Self-Care Day; self-care is about doing things for yourself to maintain your overall health and well-being. It’s been a hectic year, so use this day as a chance to reflect on your mind and body to make the rest of 2017 as healthy and successful as possible.

  • Reflect on your goals
    • For many of us, we set resolutions in January, and while some of them last, they can often fall by the wayside come summer. A trick I like to use is writing goals in a journal weekly to remind myself of my bigger year-long resolutions, so I’m reminded what I’m doing to achieve them on an ongoing basis… and whenever discouraged, don’t be afraid to ask your family and friends for help in achieving them!self-care
    • I also have a big chalkboard on my kitchen wall that I look at throughout the day. I put my BIG goals there and it is a constant reminder to BE A BAWSE.
  • Reflect on your health
    • With summer well underway, it’s important to reflect on your self-care routine for your body. Now might be the time to make sure you are scheduling all your regular screenings with your doctor, including screening for skin cancer. Self-care routines are important year-round and it is crucial to wear sunscreen and follow other sun protection measures, like wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, a hat and sunglasses, to protect your skin from cancer-causing UV rays. When used as directed with other sun protection measures, Coppertone® ClearlySheer® SPF 50 Body Lotion and ClearlySheer® SPF 50 Face Lotion help protect your skin from invisible ultraviolet rays; even better they’re light and breathable, go on leaving a matte finish, and don’t close your pores! It’s important to wear your sunscreen every day, even if it’s cloudy because UV rays can still penetrate clouds! On the other hand, when the sun is out, you are getting the full impact of UVA/UVB rays!self-care
    • Get outside. The weather this year has been a bit crazy with heat wave highs and torrential downpours but we have finally got a new bike trailer from Everyday Bicycles so we explore our city. You may prefer to job or hike but now is a great time to get out and explore.
  • Reflect on your sleep schedule
    • Stress can cause all sorts of bad things, including a lack of sleep. To help clear your mind ahead of your bedtime, I suggest turning off all electronics at least an hour before you go to bed, and instead focus on some bedtime reading! But if you find that your eyes are feeling a bit dry and sore, try out hydraSense® Eye Drops as a convenient lubricating solution with no preservatives to help relieve your symptoms.self-care
    • We have totally been taking advantage of our laxxer schedule by sleeping in, taking naps as needed and generally trying to get as much shuteye as possible before the hustle and bustle of back to school starts back up.self-care
  • Reflect on your nutrition
    • Lastly, a big part of self-care comes from nutrition. Up to 60 per cent of Canadians fall short in getting important nutrients from food alone. To complement your diet, try One A Day® Gummies for daily nutritional support that has overall health needs in mind, like bone health*.self-care
    • Take full advantage of all the fresh farmer markets happening around your community. If you have thought ahead and planted a garden this year you may be able to harvest some goodies now. We have raspberries in our front garden that are a real treat whenever we get out of the car.  self-care

*Helps in the development and maintenance of bones and teeth.

What other things will you be reflecting on today?

This is a good reminder that some days, it’s okay to slow down and not rush off to the next thing and the next thing and the next thing after that.

I will say the one thing that gets us off track here, is later summer nights. It creates havoc on the sleep routine. If you can try and stick close to your usual bedtimes, you will be forever grateful. Nothing good comes out of staying up late in this household.

Lots of great tips. You always have to remember that you cannot take care of others unless you take care of yourself.

I started drinking two liters of water a couple months ago and its been amazing; every week I have started implementing a new, small self-care item into my daily schedule from taking 10 minutes to enjoy my morning tea to reading for 30 minutes each night. This week’s self care item is to go out with a friend or girlfriends once a month.

I’ve been reflecting a lot on nutrition lately. We have really become reliant on the warm weather sugary treats like ice cream and popsicles lately as well as getting take-out when it’s too hot to cook. I have to make some changes and better prepare for eating in the heat.

This was a good reminder for me… honestly I don’t really take very good care of myself at all – hardly sleep, eat junk, not a water fan and get no exercise. Then I wonder why I feel like crap all the time, lol. Time to wake up and reduce the coffee!

While it can be hard to find the time for self-care when you’re chasing 3 kids 5 and under around, it’s really important! Even if it’s something as simple as taking a multi-vitamin. 🙂

  37. August 18, 2017 / 9:49 pm

These tips are so important to remember.I am caregiver to others less fortunate than me but I must remember to take care of myself or they will not have my help. 🙂
