How we Achieved Potty-Training Success: Our Story

How we Achieved Potty-Training Success: Our Story

Remember back in March when I wrote the post on starting to potty-train A? We’re still actively working on it and getting better every day.

Although A has gotten a lot better at telling us that she needs to go there are still random puddles through the house. She takes the initiative to clean them up by unrolling a roll of paper towels and covering the puddle. This may be contributing to the loss of forests all over the world so we are trying to work with her.

She has also improved immensely when it comes to waking up dry from naps. We have to remind her the moment she wakes up though that she has to pee in the potty and like a tiny zombie she waddles over to the washroom and does her business.

Night-time potty use is not happening. I refuse to wake her up in the middle of the night to use the potty because I am scared she will stay awake and then we would have a whole different mess to deal with.

She IS waking up dry some mornings although the moment she wakes its like the never-ending pee. The fact that she is awake before me everyday and downstairs with her siblings  makes for some seriously wet diapers but I will be putting a potty by her bed and getting my older kids on board to remind her. Fingers crossed!

PullUps® Potty Partnership

We have recently partnered up with Pull-Ups® for the PullUps® Potty Partnership. To say it was difficult to hide the huge box from A until we were ready to hit the ground running is an understatement.

potty

Included in our PullUps® Potty Partnership kit was all the fun and useful things we needed to once and for all kick the diapers to the curb like:

  • Pull-Ups® Training Pants
  • Pull-Ups® Flushable Wipes
  • Potty seat and chair
  • Milestone chart to track and award your child’s progress
  • Potty training book
  • Plush toy to reward potty accomplishments
  • $25 Walmart gift card to help you stock up on other potty training essentials outlined in the Potty Partnership Toolkit

Before I began our journey I logged into the PullUps® website and took a quick quiz to find out how to best approach A in her quest to be diaper-free. After answering some quick questions I found out that my little A was an OWL (HOOT HOOT). Reading the description I think it describes A to a T.

One night once she fell asleep I set to work setting up our powder room into her potty palace. Since she wakes up before me I missed the initial excitement (zzzz) but I was awoken by her excitedly showing me her new Doc’ McStuffins doll. Knowing from the quiz I did that my little owl needed to keep track of her progress I put her progress chart on the wall and showed her the stickers that correspond. This chick would do anything for stickers so we were off to a good start.

potty

First thing first A loves Pull-Ups®. We have boxes all over the house in both girl and boy designs (Jake the Pirate and Mater WHAT!) because they still allow her to be a big girl and give me peace of mind. These ones though have the Cool & Learn patch so that if the kids do make a oopsie they are made aware. A was not used to this and when we had an accident at my MIL house she told me right away to change her. It was a great reminder.

We read the book and played with the doll. I read her the chart and we also discussed the hand-washing picture I put up behind the sink. We purchased an inexpensive stool from the local dollar store so that she could take the initiative herself. She is really good at being independent and she’s a tad bossy so we are no longer allowed to help her because “Me do it Mom” is screamed like a wild banshee.

potty

The included book let me discuss the process with her (which she loved) and show her step-by-step what was going to happen. At the end I asked her if she wanted to be a baby or a big girl and the decision was made that we could proceed in growing up. A wants to be a “big girl”.

Trips are now being made out of the house without a Pull-Up® on. Its still a little nerve-wracking when she screams in Costco on a busy Sunday that she has to go potty while pulling up her dress and trying to take off her underwear. On a recent trip to Loblaw’s you could see a trail of a shoe, another shoe and then underwear outside the stall but she made it.

Its still a little nerve-wracking when she screams in Costco on a busy Sunday that she has to go potty while pulling up her dress and trying to take off her underwear.

We followed her cues and in turn are almost done potty-training kid #3. One more to go and my pockets will be full again. Who are we kidding they will never be full but I can put the $$$ into something else, like underwear.

So happy to hear that she’s enjoying this new chapter in her life and having fun along the way. When they’re ready, they’re ready but with four kids, you know that already 😉

I’d give this gift to my friends daughter that just had a baby. Thanks for the chance.

P.S. I’d do almost anything for stickers too.

  3. June 9, 2016 / 8:10 am

My kids scored as puppies on the test.

In reality, they toilet trained when they were ready. It wasn’t until over 3 years but when they were done, they were done. Fortunately, I was at home with them so there wasn’t any need to have it happen sooner.

    Besos Sarah.
