At Home Rapid Covid-19 Antigen Tests We Love

It almost feels like things are getting back to normal right? We are cautiously optimistic over here and so ready to get back to living life. Full disclosure I have calmed down a lot now that I have the at-home Covid-19 antigen tests from Haven Testing sitting in my medicine cabinet.

LIVING DURING COVID

If you have been following along with us you know we pulled our kids out of school back in March of 2020. Although a lot of factors attributed to us hunkering down I am glad about our decision looking back. We had no exposures, didn’t get sick, and managed to have a great time connecting as a family.

That being said we’ve had half our household vaccinated now and with stores, sports, and schools opening up it’s starting to feel a lot like the pre-covid days and we are excited about the transition.

HOW DOES THE AT-HOME COVID 19 ANTIGEN TEST WORK

At-home antigen tests work by testing for contagiousness because they detect the presence of an active COVID-19 infection, whether you have symptoms or not. This kit is so simple to use I feel confident that my preteens could do it even if I am not at home.

To begin you would take the swabs and insert them into your nose just half an inch and move it around to get a good specimen of the gunk in your nose. This is nowhere near how far you get the swab put in when you get tested at a government testing facility and since it’s done by a parent or loved one that kids trust it will be a lot less invasive.

You have to then set up the extraction tube and fill it with buffer solution. You will insert the swab and swirl it around to mix well. After letting it sit for 2 minutes you then add the nozzle and add 3 drops into the sample well of the test cassette. Results are ready in 15 minutes and you will know whether you are positive on the spot. You can then choose to get tested by a local health system to confirm results.

WHO CAN USE THE HAVEN TESTING AT-HOME COVID 19 ANTIGEN TEST?

The Haven Testing kit can be used by anyone over 2 years of age. Obviously, you need to do the test for your little ones, but as I said, I think my older kids could easily do it themselves. I think it is a must-have for households with children and people who are at risk whether it is due to health reasons or a job that puts you around a lot of people.

AT-HOME COVID 19 ANTIGEN TEST OFFER PEACE OF MIND FOR PARENTS

Here is the thing. My kids are going back to school in September. They are playing on their rep sports teams and taking swimming lessons. There will be visits with family and friends. As long as we follow public health guidelines my kids will be doing all of these things but let’s be honest here, I need some peace of mind.

I now know that I can quickly test my kids if they wake up and are exhibiting symptoms from the privacy of home. I know I can offer guests or friends a test before we engage in a visit where social distancing is not an option. I can check our family before we visit someone who is a high risk to protect them in case we are positive and not showing symptoms. I have peace of mind now.

HOW MUCH DOES HAVEN TESTING: AT-HOME COVID 19 ANTIGEN TEST COST?

Currently, the cost for one kit which includes 5 tests is $99 CAD dollars. It works out to be less than $20 per test.

If you compare that to the cost of possibly missing work because you have come into contact with someone who is Covid-19 positive or wake up with symptoms that you are unsure of, I would much rather test to know whether I am contagious than miss out on a day of work.

Think about when September rolls around and the kids are back to school and wake up with a runny nose or sore throat. You can now quickly test to see if they are contagious and whether they need to stay home and you need to call work.

I’m a little concerned about these at home vaccine kits. But then, I got both of my vaccines earlier this summer, so I am good for now but would consider the booster if given the chance as I got underlying health conditions.

I think it’s a great idea to be tested to see if you are contagious too. I would rather know than to spread it to innocent people and make them sick.

I didn’t even know these were available – love the idea of being to quickly test at home if needed, especially now that our kids are back to school and sports full time! Having these on hand would give good peace of mind when in doubt.

These are a good stop-gap if you are about to visit someone or participate in an event/activity; you can test yourself to make sure you are not positive. But they do have a high false-negative rate.
