  1. Conduct a family meeting

Before the move happens, it’s good to ensure everyone’s on the same page. If you have the whole family getting involved with the move, then you should look to conduct a family meeting. This is important because it’s going to keep everyone singing from the same hymn sheet once the moving process begins.

A family meeting is good to lay down the ground rules and to make sure all of your family members know what’s going on with the moving day. For most of the kids, it’s likely to be their first experience of moving, so it’s important that it remains a positive one at least – even if it feels super stressful for the adults.

  1. Purge before packing up

Before you go packing everything up, you should ensure all of the things you’re packing are definitely needed in the next home. The problem that many people have when it comes to moving is that they often take with them, stuff they didn’t need to bring. Ultimately, they pay more to get it removed, to then just get rid of it eventually when they’ve gotten to the new place.

With that being said, look to purge everything you don’t need before you start packing. That means going room by room and assessing every little bit of furniture or belongings you own. That way, you can be assured that everything you need and want is going to be coming with you. Everything you don’t need can be chucked out or sold accordingly.

Purging can be extremely therapeutic, especially as many of us will have a habit of hoarding stuff over time.

  1. Give everyone jobs

When it comes to moving with kids, you want to give everyone jobs to do. Even the little ones might not really have physical influence over the move but want to feel like they’re involved.

For example, the little ones could be responsible for putting a sticker on each box as it leaves the front door. This sticker might not mean anything but it gives them a sense of responsibility, which is a good life lesson to learn!

For the older kids, you might want to give them the responsibility of packing up their own rooms or at least assisting in doing so. Some might even want to help with the loading and unloading, but that might be on a child-by-child basis – not every hormonal teenager will be on board to help.

  1. Store anything you don’t need straight away into storage

If there’s furniture or belongings that you want to keep but don’t want in your home, then you could always look at the option of storing it in a storage unit for the time being.

Storage units are highly beneficial because they keep all your belongings safe and they are often more secure than your own property is. With that in mind, you should look at the local storage units near you in order to find the best one for your needs.

These units can be affordable for anyone who’s on a budget and will often depend on the amount of furniture you’re storing away. You might also want to store furniture in these units if there’s a delay between you moving from the old property to the new one.

  1. Organize the boxes onto the removal van in order

To help future you from getting all stressed out with boxes all over the place, you should look to get them organized before they go into the removal van. Labeling your boxes will be helpful and ensuring everything is listed down to the very last item will make unpacking easier.

You might not want to unpack everything on the first day or night of arriving, so it’s good to know where everything is. Organizing the boxes onto the removal van in order is also something to be mindful of.

For example, if you’re kitchen is located at the back of the home, you might want to put all your kitchen stuff at the front nearest to the truck’s door so that you can work your way room by room from the back of the home to the front.

Ultimately, having the boxes all grouped room by room is going to make everything run a lot smoother.

Hopefully, with these tips, you’ll make your moving experience with kids, a lot easier and almost stress-free!
