Chilly Home? These Are The Most Likely Offenders

Your home deserves to be cozy, no matter what the weather outside is doing! It deserves to be a place where you can relax in a temperate environment, where you’re not shivering away under a blanket and constantly changing the thermostat.

And if you’re living in a home that’s always a little bit chilly, there’s a chance the property itself has a bit of a temperature issue. You’re throwing money away on trying to keep the place warm enough to live in, and it’s all leaking out from one feature or another.

Let’s go through the potential causes!

Your Walls

Do you know what’s in your walls? By that we mean the type of insulation, as well as the thickness of it – and any unwelcome visitors that could have chewed their way in, of course.

Wall insulation comes with a minimum thickness, which modern homes usually adhere to. However, even if you’re living in a recently built home, the insulation can wear down and get a bit thin. If there’s a chill in the air, it might need topping up.

Walls also contain a lot of wiring, studs, and plenty of structurally important materials you don’t want to disturb. So when the time comes that you want to check the walls aren’t the worst offenders, you’ve got to be very careful about the work you do!

Your Windows

Yes, the panes of glass you use to let the sun in and get a peek into the outside world could be the worst offenders for the chill that’s going round your home. And yes, even more so than your doors!

Windows can be poorly sealed, they can have gaps or holes in the layers of glass that make up the thickness, and they can be old and brittle and far less airtight than they used to be. All in all, your windows are letting the cold in and making your home far less cozy.

As such, you could be in need of new window installation to get rid of the old panes that are doing nothing for you. Get some new, properly insulated windows put in their place and actually seal your home off from the cold outside.

Your Central Heating

The central heating system in your home isn’t infallible. It’s not something you can always just turn on and use to make your home toasty warm.

Sometimes a problem crops up in the pipes, and if you’ve been trying to use it to heat your home and had no warming effects, something is wrong!

The settings could be wrong, there could be a blocked connection somewhere, or the radiators could need bleeding. Either way, check your central heating and see if it’s at fault.

If your home is a bit chilly (and especially if it’s only been this way in recent months), the areas above are likely to be the culprits. Check them out, look for damage, and get the issue fixed once and for all.
