7 Features That Will Make Your Home Safer

We all want a safe place to live, right? Well, it’s actually pretty easy for you to achieve your aims of a home that is cozy, calm and safe as…well, safe as houses if you add these features to your space.

1. Custom Window Well Covers: Don’t Fall In!

Starting below ground level, let’s talk about those sneaky hazards: window wells. They’re necessary for letting light into your basement but can be dangerous fall hazards, especially if you have little ones or pets who don’t watch where they’re going. Thankfully, CoverUp Window Wells has your back. These nifty inventions keep the critters, kids, and clueless adults from accidental spelunking sessions. Plus, they can be tailored to fit your home’s aesthetic, because safety doesn’t have to be ugly.

2. Smart Locks: Ditch the Key Under the Mat

Still hiding a key under the doormat or a fake rock that screams “I’m totally a real rock”? It’s time to upgrade to smart locks. These gadgets allow you to lock and unlock your doors remotely, set temporary access codes for visitors, and receive alerts on who’s coming and going. It’s like having a bouncer for your home but without the earpiece and scowl.

3. Motion Sensor Lights: Surprise Your Nighttime Guests

Nothing says “Welcome” like a light that snaps on the moment you step onto the property—or “Scram!” to a would-be intruder. Motion sensor lights are your first line of defence, illuminating anyone trying to sneak around your home under the cover of darkness. They’re also great for those nights when you come home with groceries and can’t find the porch light switch.

4. Security Cameras: Eyes Everywhere

If you’ve ever wanted to channel your inner spy, installing security cameras around your home might be just the ticket. Today’s cameras can offer high-definition feeds directly to your phone, complete with night vision. It’s like having your own reality TV show where the stars are the mailman and that squirrel that keeps trying to steal your birdseed.

5. Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: The Silent Sentinels

While less flashy than cameras and smart locks, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are unsung heroes in keeping your home safe. Test them regularly and replace batteries at least once a year—consider it a birthday party for your detectors where the only guests are you and a 9-volt battery.

6. Water Sensors: Keep It Dry

Water damage can sneak up on you like a ninja. Water sensors can alert you to leaks before they turn into floods. Place them near water heaters, sump pumps, washing machines, or under sinks—anywhere that might decide to start its own indoor pool.

7. Home Automation System: The Brain of the Operation

If you really want to get fancy, a home automation system can integrate most of these features into a single, smart system. Control lights, locks, cameras, and alarms all from your smartphone or voice assistant. It’s like having a personal assistant who’s obsessed with safety.

Here’s to a home that is safer, smarter and just plain better to live in!

I wish they would have had water sensors years back. I have one now though. I think the window well covers are a great idea.

Water sensors would be extra helpful, especially with the recent downpour we’ve experienced leading to a lot of flooding!
