Celebrating International Women’s Day

international women's day

Today I celebrate International Women’s Day along with the world. I celebrate a future where women will get equal pay, equal rights, equal everything. Because we are equal to our male counterparts. But we are not viewed as equals just yet. I still see women posting on social media that men should get paid more, because they do HARDER work. Give me a break ladies. If I am doing the same job as a man and getting paid just 73.5 cents for every dollar men make, I am not okay with it and neither should you be.

This is 2017 not the 60’s where you support the man because he is the bread maker in the family. You can be the bread maker. You can be anything. ANYTHING.

So I am going to do my part in hopefully helping the next generation of women and men to realize that we are all equals. I am going to start in my home, with my kids, because they need to know that equality is important. That there are no such thing as women’s work or men’s work. There is work to be done and we can all do it will all do it.

Netflix Celebrates International Women’s Day

Studies have shown that girls as young as six are influenced by gender stereotypes, and that role models from the entertainment they choose can have a lasting effect. Rest assured, Netflix is home to girls who mean business and that’s something all kids can get behind! Whether it’s Violet’s quick wit, Elena’s activist mentality, or Deidra & Laney’s unorthodox thinking, there’s something for every girl to relate to. Strong female characters aren’t just important for girls, boys are also growing up with Eleven saving the crew and Tip showing that true friendship knows no bounds.international womens day

What does all of that mean?

It means that when the kids tune into some of their favourite shows they will be also learning that women (and girls) can kick ass. They can problem solve. They can do critical thinking. They can save the world. They can make decisions that directly affect their own body. They can rise up and lift those around them up as well. Because building walls and barriers, real or imaginary, will only stop us from succeeding as a whole, both men and women (and everything inbetween) need to break down the barriers and demand equality.international womens day

So we will not be celebrating International Women’s Day just today, we will be bringing equality with us in everything we do, starting off by looking for the heroines in today’s TV show.

Women should be celebrated even if we did nothing other than populating the world and yet we do everything a man can do and more !
