Why I’m Choosing muse™ & You Should Too

muse

museI am currently in survival mode, both mentally and physically. With summer winding down I am currently awaiting something close to a routine and cant wait for life to be structured again.

While other mom’s seem to have their stuff together going to the gym, yoga and long jobs I am still trying to remember to brush my teeth and not wear my pyjamas for more than two days straight.

I’m exhausted from my 19 hour days and even more mentally exhausted from trying to run a household, work from home, and still have some fun as a family. If you haven’t already read about my parenting fail that is adding humongous stress currently you can do so here.

This is the time in my life when I would benefit the most out of doing the downward dog on a foam mat listening to someone walk me through my breathing exercises but since no yoga studio takes a mom with four kids attached to her hip I am stuck at home.

muse™

I have taken my mental health into my hands for the past month. I recently received muse™-the brain sensing headband at a media event and I can’t imagine falling asleep without it now. It is as much a part of my night time routine as brushing my teeth.

Muse: the brain sensing headband is a brain fitness tool that helps do more with your mind by helping you calm and settle your mind.

Muse is a comfortable, lightweight headband with 7 sensors designed to detect and measure your brain activity, just as a heart monitor measures your pulseIMG_0751

Using muse™

I was both excited and scared to try muse™. I was happy to find something that would allow me to not only wind down but also to help me train my brain to relax it throughout the day. Even when I am not wearing the headband I now know that taking those “deep breathes” actually does work to clear my mind.

While my headset was charging for the first time I downloaded the Muse app onto my phone. After setting up my profile and linking the headset to my phone via Bluetooth I went through the tutorial. Although I was anxious to jump right in and skip the tutorial I am glad I did it as it gave me some insight as to what to expect. To use muse you also need a set of earphones (not included).Screenshot_2015-08-11-00-55-13

Once the headset was on and all of the sensors were touching my skin (the app lets you know) I was ready to calibrate. Muse will ask you 3 questions and and have you answer them in your mind. It takes a snapshot of your brain in this active state so it knows when you meditate if you are active or not. I found this difficult sometimes at the beginning and I wasn’t naming consistently. It made it harder to quiet my mind. After 3-4 sessions I had it figured out and everything was smooth sailing.Screenshot_2015-08-17-00-48-36

I started off with the the 3-minute sessions and after feeling like I got the hang of it I moved on to the 7- and 12-minute sessions. The fact that I could find this time to unwind and relax after a long day had me so happy. My sleep has improved and my all-over attitude has improved. I’m learning to stop my mind from going from zero to 1-billion even when the headset is not on and I need that right now.

Keeping Track

Probably one of my favourite features is the tracking tool. I can see how “active or calm” I have been in each session and track it. In the app I can set goals and collect achievements such as a “covey of birds”. What you hear when you wear muse is what you would hear at a beach. When you are calm their is no wind and the waves are coming in slowly. When your brain gets more active you hear the waves and wind increase. When you are very active the wind and waves are loud and starting your breathed to 10 and taking deep breaths will bring you back down into a relaxed state of mind. When your mind is calm for a period a bird will land beside you and make a little chirp. When you have achieve enough calm time the covey arrives (lots of birds). That is what I strive for.Screenshot_2015-08-17-00-48-57

MY brain never shuts down. I swear even when I sleep I am making lists of things that I need to get down. I have looked at Muse before. I am so glad I got to read this because I never really understood how it worked. Sounds great! BUT I have a question for you. If you didn’t get it free would you spend $300 for it? That is a lot of money for us no matter what the benefit is 🙁 thus why I have not gotten one yet.

I don’t always take the time I need to relax. After a stressful day at work, I think it would be beneficial to see the effects of meditation on my brain.

I have read about this headband. I get migraines & apparently you can shorten the length of a headache and lessen the intensity but using the headband to help you meditate. I would really like to try that.

lately, ive started 2 new jobs, simultaneously – in the past, i had very little job related stress, but at the moment, I’m so stressed, it is affecting the joy i get from life – normally my de-stress would be to spend extra time with my kids, either snuggling in my big bed, watching movies, or going out to have a picnic in the park – but with my 2 new jobs, im out of the house until dinner time —- lots of stress going on in my life, so I believe I could benefit from any solution at this point

I’ve tried traditional meditation, but I don’t know if I’m doing it right, and I don’t feel much of an impact. This would give me feedback that will help me improve how I meditate and feel the health benefits (mental and physical) that meditation offers.

Well, I’ve been waking up lately feeling like pretty unrested even with 8 or more hours of sleep, so using the Muse could help identify the problem and help me calm and improve my brain waves.
