Gravid Weighted Blanket — Does it Work?

Gravid Weighted Blanket — Does it Work?

This post is in partnership with Gravid. They sent us these products to try and we are giving you our 100% honest opinion.

After hearing of all the benefits of weighted blankets over the past few years we decided to give the Gravid weighted blanket a try to see if it would have the same positive effects on us. This house is a mixing pot of anxiety, nerves, insomnia and if I am completely honest, sometimes we just need a hug.

Weighted blankets have been all over the news and social media and for good reason, they cover a large array of issues with what seems like a super easy and quick fix. But I had questions and so I am also sharing what I found with you. Let me know if there is anything else you want to know about Gravid weighted blankets.

What Makes Gravid Amazing?

The fact that this Canadian company has high standards, amazing customer service (read the reviews) and uses quality products. The Gravid 3.0 and the EcoBreeze Cooling Cover (what we have) are made of Tencel™ Lyocell which is naturally-derived, sustainable and biodegradable. Plus you can just throw the blanket in the washing machine as needed so it is truly no fuss.

How Does the Weighted Blanket Work?

The Gravid weighted blanket works by something called Deep Touch Pressure (DTP) or Deep Pressure Stimulation (DPS) where the feeling of weighted physical pressure will give someone a calming effect. It is the big hug we all need (minus the other person, YAY) when we are needing to calm down, fall asleep or just feel better.

Does a Weighted Blanket Weigh A Lot?

They do, but you totally want them to to get the full benefit of what they have to offer. The Gravid weighted blanket is made with this really cool stitched mini-grid technology that prevents the beads from shifting so you always get even pressure when using it. It also has a zipper around the perimeter of the blanket that zips right onto either the grey Ecobreeze (cooling) or grey Microplush (extra-soft sensory-friendly) covers and stops the blankets from moving around inside the covers. It makes sure you get all over pressure and it’s comfortably spread out.

Weighted Blanket Benefits

The benefits of a weighted blanket are so varied and I love that it helps with such a wide array of issues. They are said to help with stress, anxiety, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, sensory processing disorders, helps people with ADHD focus and just allow people to get a hug when needed (see what research is saying). I really like that it is an all-natural aid to many problems instead of unnecessarily medicating if not necessary.

For us though this blanket tends to now live with my oldest child. For the past 11+ years, I have been laying with him as he falls asleep as he is an anxious kid who was often scared. It’s been a few weeks of him now using the Gravid weighted blanket and last night as I laid in his bed waiting for him to come he walked in with his blanket and told me I can go as he no longer needs me to fall asleep. I know, I quietly gasped too.

That was the moment that I realized that the Gravid weighted blanket was doing exactly what we needed it to do. It calmed him, it put him to sleep, and it let him stay sleeping even without me there.

I really like how we can proactively now reach for the blanket when we start feeling our emotions are becoming too big.

Personally I was more curious about whether it would help me with my anxiety and stress. This season is really hard for me and I know I am not alone in that sentiment. I found for me I needed to make sure I was covered to my neck in order for the relief to wash over my body. It is a little difficult to explain but euphoria is close. I also end up falling asleep most times because the use of weighted blankets releases serotonin and melatonin which makes it easier to relax.

Nobody in our family has sensory processing disorders but we do have anxiety attacks and in both instances, the weighted blanket can really calm people down and give them that hug that is so needed. I really like how we can proactively now reach for the blanket when we start feeling our emotions are becoming too big.

Something I want to explore more is the use of the Gravid weighted blanket to help with focus, restlessness and impulse control, like with those who have ADHD. As a kid, I used to take meds for this but have long ago stopped. I have a nagging suspicion that my oldest has the same issues as I but since I won’t go the medication route unless it’s absolutely necessary I am going to see if we can get him to do things like homework and reading while using the blanket. Once we give this a try I will update this post to tell you whether we have made any progress.

Anxiety is a fickle b**** and I am glad my oldest and I can slip under the Gravid weighted blanket to calm down when needed.

My fave benefit though? The instant hug that it provides. As much as I hate to say this sometimes this momma is stretched thin and I can’t be everywhere. The blanket provides hugs when needed and although it can’t replace a person it can start the process until I get there to finish off the job. Anxiety is a fickle b**** and I am glad my oldest and I can slip under the Gravid weighted blanket to calm down when needed.

What is the Weighted Blanket Filled With?

Our blanket is nice and heavy but it’s not bulky or noisy when we move around. I was so curious to know what our Gravid weighted blanket was filled with and it seems its non-toxic, micro-rounded glass beads with a diameter of 1mm. We don’t have auditory, sensory or physical sensitivities but if you are shopping for someone who does these will be perfect.

I have recently started using a weighted blanket, but I find it too heavy and makes me anxious. I think I need a slightly lighter one to start off. Love that they are helping and Canadian.

My daughter has one but I find it too big (Queen) and too heavy 25lbs. and then I feel trapped under it. I would probably like it if it was lighter.
