Meet Sum-m: Life’s Hectic, Meal Times Shouldn’t Be

sum-m

Asian food is a family favourite over here but eating out with four kids can be a hassle—not just for us but other customers at our favourite restaurants.

That’s why we’re always on the search to bring our favourite flavours home but it must be fast and easy with little to no prep—like it would be if we ate out.

Life’s Hectic, Meal Times Shouldn’t Be

Life is busy hectic lately. With my work schedule and the kids having school, activities and burgeoning social lives some days we are looking for easy reheat and serve options.

Just because we’re feeling especially pressed for time doesn’t mean that we’re OK compromising on flavour though. We like our food and the expression ‘hangry’ rings true for all 6 of us if we’re not fed well.

Fine Choice Foods’ Sum-m! Brand

We were first introduced to Fine Choice Foods’ Sum-m! brand a few months ago on one of our shopping trips to our local Costco. I grabbed a package with little to no expectations, but I grabbed it because we love to try new things. Costco is pretty good at vetting the products they carry, I mean they’ve never failed us yet.

I remember the first time we made the spring rolls we only made half the package thinking it would be a snack. When everyone’s eyes lit up after the first bite and we all mumbled our approvals with stuffed mouths I got up and threw the second portion into the oven while we snacked away.

sum-m

We’ve continued to grab their products when we shopped because they are convenient and so easy to prepare. My oldest kids can even get them ready themselves and I can totally get behind a product that makes my job as a parent easier.

Sum-m! Vegetable Spring Rolls and Sesame Ginger Chicken Gyozas

The two products that we like to indulge in from Sum-m! are the Vegetable Spring Rolls and Sesame Ginger Chicken Gyozas. Out in Western Canada these can be found in local retailers and supermarkets but the rest of us Canadians can grab them from Costco across Canada.

sum-m

The spring rolls have been individually hand rolled and are filled with cabbage, carrot, mushroom, ground sesame and spices. With the first bite into that crunchy wrapper, your senses get consumed with hints of sesame oil and it’s oh so good. I like to dip mine in the Sum-m! plum sauce but my kids like them just the way they are—testament to their awesomeness.

sum-m

The Sesame Ginger Chicken Gyozas are my son’s favourite food in the world. They are bursting at the seams with cabbage, chicken, carrot, green onion, cilantro and all those flavours are infused with sesame oil, garlic, ginger and soy sauce. The layers of flavour present are advanced enough that my husband and I are impressed but also work so well together that my kids will all devour them.

sum-m

We eat these in two different ways—although I have a sneaking suspicion that my oldest also microwaves them for breakfast while I sleep.

sum-m

I pan fry them so that they get a crunchy golden bottom. They become like a perfect mixture of soft and juicy dumpling with crunchy wrapper. Dipped in the Sum-m! gyoza sauce it utter perfection.

sum-m

For a meal option on rushed days I add the dumplings to premade Pho while I cook it. In only 6 minutes I can have a hot bowl of soup in front of my hungry family and they always, always ask for seconds.

sum-m

These are in the refrigerated section of my Costco (where the dips/appetizers are) but the best part is you can freeze whatever portions you are not going to eat by the best before date, they’re fresh remember ?
