Using the Reading Eggs App to Teach my Kids How to Read

I’ve taken it upon myself to teach my 5-year-old how to read before she heads back to school and hits grade 1. What? When Did Everyone Else Learn How To Read?

Lets back up a little bit to the past two years of school and discuss how I am 100% sure she was just there to play at all the stations, sing songs and socialize all while learning through play. I am 99% sure that they were not learning how to read but somehow at Kindergarten graduation, I watched as most of the kids in the two graduating classes stepped onto the stage and read from their cue cards. The Reading Eggs App is FUN, No Really It Is

After I signed up for my free month I quickly installed the app to my phone and ran to find Aria. She, of course, ran away as I have tried to pull this same move with other apps on her but I pulled her into my lap and we quickly did the placement test which has placed her on level 31. I mentally tapped myself on the back since I have been “working” with her every morning and she knew some sounds and congratulated her on her amazing starting spot.

I sat with her a little bit to make sure she didn’t promptly end the program and shuffle over to Youtube when I turned my back but she got the hang of it and started to work her way through the quick and fun phonics-based games.

I love that I can hear her making the sounds out when she uses the program and the repetitive yet different levels really drill in the sounds and words without being boring. Plus she really likes when she passes each level and that keeps her coming back for more.

How Reading Eggs Teaches Kids to Read

Reading Eggs is based on proven scientific research and works on teaching children through phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. It not only teaches individual sounds but also shows how each individual sounds come together to make words and keeps building on what kids know when they’re ready.

We are mainly focused on working our way through the map and hitting each next level. If they don’t understand a concept it will continue to be taught until it is understood. Plus I get some alone time to enjoy a hot tea while she sits there tackling each level.

How Do You Know How Your Child Is Progressing Using Reading Eggs?

I get emails from Reading Eggs letting me know she has been progressing and what I can do to help supplement her learning. I also get emails if she fails a test so I can stay on top of what she may need extra help with. Plus there are printable awards you can print out once each map is complete which are a great long term goal to work towards.

On the family dashboard, you get a very thorough breakdown of your child’s progress including test results. As a stats driven mama I like to see the numbers improve.
