3 Tips to Keep Your Kids Healthy This Back-to-School Season

On the second day of school, as my three oldest kids were about to walk out the door, my youngest projectile vomited all over me as I sat on the stairs. The first thing that came out of my mouth was “get them out of the house fast before they get sick”. It’s one thing to have one sick kid but when you multiply that by 4 and possible two adults (one which would have man-flu/cold) and our house would spiral into the depths of….okay I totally blew things out of proportion there but you get the picture.

3 Tips to Keep Your Kids Healthy This Back-to-School Season

We have 3 very important rules in our house that have been working fairly well in keeping us healthy over the school years.

Change Out of School Clothes. Our kids wear uniforms to school and the moment they walk into the door they have to change out of them. This stops them from wearing clothes that have possibly been sneezed on (or worse) in our home. I have a laundry basket set up on the landing of our basement stairs and they just throw their clothes down there and run upstairs to change into their regular clothes.

Wash Their Hands. This is a biggie as well. Who knows what the kids touched at school so getting them in the habit of washing their hands when they come home helps us stay healthy. We also eat dinner right after they come home from school and they still eat with their hands sometimes. Nobody wants them putting school germs in their mouths–yuck!

Taking a Multi-Vitamin. We can’t ensure that they have balanced meals all the time so we supplement with a daily multi-vitamin. It helps to keep their bodies in tip-top shape and I don’t have to worry if my youngest only eats cucumbers for dinner.

No matter what steps we take to keep the kids healthy sometimes they are already sick by the time they get home. All we can do at that point is deal with the symptoms and make them as comfortable as possible until they are once again healthy.

When it comes to my medicine cabinet I like to think that I am one of those parents who have learned the hard way that it is better to be prepared than wait until something is needed to purchase. There have been too many middle of the night runs to the 24-hour pharmacy in our first years of parenting so now we are prepared–just in case.

When we start hearing sniffles in the house we spring right into action. Whether their noses are congested, sneezing or running like crazy we use Coryzlia®. I know I can rely on ‘Cory’ to help us clear up the symptoms and get our little ones breathing clearly again.

The coughs, the ones that bring up phlegm, the ones that are dry and raspy, the ones that keep our kids up at night and us sitting at their bedside worried, they get hit with Stodal®. Stodal® is a wonderfully thick syrup that can be taken from 1+ years of age and does not cause drowsiness. Plus it’s also free of dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine and guaifenesin.

You can’t predict the flu but once it hits you can do everything in your power to help easy the symptoms. In those harried moments when I am dodging spewing body fluids from both ends of my kids I want something that is easy to administer and can usually be done with one hand while I am trying to calm my babies. I pull out the big gun–Oscillococcinum®. It’s pre-measured in handy little tubes that are easy to give to your whole family–yes from birth to far beyond our years right now follows the same dosing schedule (although infants get theirs dissolved in water)boiron canada

It takes care of body aches, headaches, fever and chills all while being non drowsy and all natural. Plus it tastes pretty great, especially when you area sick and the thought of keeping anything down is daunting.

Feeling Better, Faster

Sometimes no matter what steps you take to keep sickness at bay your LOs come home sick. It happens to the best of us but having a cabinet full of natural medicines from Boiron Canada makes it not so bad. Being prepared is one of my biggest parenting hacks and one I will tell any parent who will listen. Because when it comes to my kid’s health, I don’t take chances.

Being prepared totally makes me feel like I’m winning at parenting even when everything is going sideways. ? I like the tip for changing out of the clothes, I think I’ll adopt that this year.

I like the changing clothes idea, that’s smart. And yes handwashing is definitely the best defence!

Boiron’s kids products are amazing! But I like your basic rules; we always changed out of out outside or school clothes into home clothes when we got home. I have followed that same rule for my boys… Kids and schools are germy, and they carry all that around and back with them (I work full time and I hate getting sick when they carry home something).

As kids we also always had to change out of our school uniforms as soon as we got home, seems like a good precaution to me. Washing hands is very important, there are so many germs flying around and not just in school either. I was shocked to read what was on our cell phones, money, door knobs etc etc.

I think washing hands is super important, and possibly more effective than spraying disinfectant cleaners all over every surface.

I really like to have the habit of washing hands whenever coming home from being out. And I’ve used a few different homeopathics recently and found it really helped me.
