DreamWorks Trolls: An Epic Family Movie Night

Back when I was a kid I remember putting Shrek into the VCR at home and watching it on repeat. I am the oldest of four kids with 12 years between my youngest sibling and I and somehow we could all happily agree to watch Shrek. That same timeless humour and amazing music are still being watched in our house, although we no longer have to put it in the VCR as it’s streaming on Netflix.

I think we may have found a modern day version of Shrek although this one is all glitter, rainbows and cupcake farts. <–You’re intrigued right.

Trolls is a wonderful movie centered around family, friendship, love, bullying, believing in yourself and above all beating the bad guy (gal in this movie). If you were around in the 90’s you either had Trolls or wish you had Trolls. This is taking you back to your childhood and animating it in a way that will keep you laughing for long after the final credits roll.  Centered around the always-happy, scrapbook-loving Princess Poppy and sad, paranoid Branch going to save their fellow Trolls from the grasp of the Bergens. The Bergens believe that the only way they can feel happiness is if they eat a Troll, done once a year on Trollstice.

I may have had happy tears a few times during this movie and even cried a little when I thought the Trolls were going to be … oops almost spoiled it. So if you are looking for something to do with the kids why not grab a copy of the Trolls Party Edition DVD/Blue Ray and some arts and crafts supplies and throw an EPIC scrapbooking party like we did. Or just get the movie and prepare for your kids to watch it on repeat for the next 11 weeks while you are unexplainably cheery thanks to the soundtrack.

Surprising the kids with fun things is one of my favourite things to do. It doesn’t have to be a grand affair but letting them know that there would be a party for them along with movie night when they come home from school can make a rather bland Tuesday into the BEST DAY EVER!

Earlier this week we let the kids know that we were having movie night but what we did not tell them was that we were going to have an EPIC arts & crafts session before the movie so that they could let some creative juices flow.

We are a family of eaters and instead of having dinner we did some serious snacking. I may have fed them what is pictured below for dinner. It was worth it so see the smiles on their faces. Also, my husband acted like crescent rolls with hotdogs inside were a delicacy. Either we have been doing dinner wrong for years or we he is the child I secretly know he is.

Did I mention that I spent some time making these cute finger puppets for the kids while they were in school? I am not usually your local Martha Stewart when it comes to kids crafts so I am pretty impressed with the outcome.

Things I learned when I tried to get the kids to craft with ALL OF THE STUFF:

  • They were like kids in a candy store. They could not get enough of anything and I feel like if I had left them to their own demise they would have been covered in glitter glue and stamps.
  • They had their own agenda.
  • They did not care about my agenda.
  • They wanted help. I was secretly hoping that they would ask because I really (like really) wanted to scrapbook. I obliged.
  • They love arts & crafts. By the state of my walls it should be obvious but I had trouble getting them to stop. I even caught my older girl hoarding glitter foam stickers under her pillow. I assured her there were plenty more where they came from and put them back with our supplies.

Things I already knew before they started crafting:

  • That they would be quiet for as long as the glitter and construction paper kept flowing.

Excuse me while I go back to the party…there’s a scrapbook page with my name on it 😉

I have partnered with Fox on this post. All opinions are my own and those awesome finger puppets are pretty awesome, am I right?

It was a lot of fun and they keep pulling out the movie to watch. I am not complaining as I find myself singing along with them 🙂

What great ideas for a movie night party! I recently watched the trolls video with my grandkids and really enjoyed it. I would be happy to watch it again.
