Hemorrhoids and Pregnancy: Everything You Need to Know

HemoClin Giveaway

HemoClin GiveawayThe Truth About Pregnancy & Labour

Once you become a mom and start talking to other moms openly you realize that most baby books you read prior to having a baby are completely lacking with actual information you can use. No one told me about my uterus contracting like I was in labour again every time I would try to breastfeed or about the after effects of getting an epidural (I just sat in my hospital bed and peed myself, NO control). But the thing that surprised me the most after talking to other moms was not only giving birth to a baby but getting a hemorrhoid in the process. None of the books I read talked about this and if they did it was just a little paragraph (not nearly enough for my curious nature).

You Got What?

For those of you wondering or about to Google hemorrhoids let me save you the time. They are swollen veins either inside or outside of your butt. Symptoms vary but I think my friends experienced quite a variety. Pregnant woman are more prone to hemorrhoids so it is nothing to be ashamed of or worried about.

Can I Ask You A Question?

So I have spent the past week calling up my mommy friends and flat out asking them if they experienced hemorrhoids due to pregnancy…much to everyone’s dismay. Some were like “what?” and to my surprise many were keen to talk about their experiences. All of them were amazed at how little they knew on the subject until they either got them or had a loved one get them

It Felt Like What?

“It felt like my butt was on fire” was one friend’s experience while a next friend did not experience this at all but claimed she was “deathly afraid to go to the washroom” over the pain she was experiencing. Yet another more severe case ended up with a toilet full of blood as the veins burst. To say the spectrum of symptoms is diverse is an understatement but one thing is for sure…they all wanted their butts back to normal.

Can I Prevent Hemorrhoids

You can try by eating a diet high in fiber and making sure you are using the bathroom regularly. No strenuous pushing either as that is a big “no-no”. Drink lots of water and do your Kegals ladies as those improve the circulation to your pelvic area. Even with the best preventive measures in place we still get hemorrhoids but there is help.

What Can I Do If I Get Hemorrhoids

  • Applying an ice pack to the area might bring you some relief and might make the swelling go down
  • Having a hot bath for 10-15 minutes may also bring you relief.
  • Keep the area clean
  • Get one of those snazzy donut pillows to help you with any discomfort while sitting
  • Treatment like HemoClin which is available in most pharmacies and available to buy discretely from home
