Receiving Our Canada Learning Bond: Smart SAVER

Canada Learning Bond

Canada Learning BondWe planted a seed a couple of months ago, a seed that will continue to grow and bloom for a long time, we applied for the Canada Learning Bond and got RESPs for our children thanks to information we received from SmartSAVER.

We applied for the Canada Learning Bond on the first day of the 2015-2016 school year, September 8th. I will remember this day for the rest of my life because it was one of those days where I felt like I was SUCCEEDING at this parenting thing. It was also the day we told our kids that they could be whatever they wanted to be when they grew up, told them we were saving for their education and we would help them achieve their goals.

I wasn’t sure they understood or cared, my daughter always excelled in school and she said she wanted to be a fairy when she grew up at her SK graduation just a few months earlier. Darius, my Darius never could focus enough to do well. He got C’s and D’s and excelled in gym. He wanted to be Batman when he grew up for as long as I remember.

But now two months into the school year I see something happening. My son is EXCELLING. He has a photographic memory when it comes to spelling and even his reading is improving. He is confident and can’t wait to share his school day with me. He does his homework in the mornings before school as it is a better fit for him than after. And the boy has DREAMS.

He wants to be a soldier and wants to be on the SQUAT (SWAT) team. I just laugh because the thought of him doing squats on a team is enough to make me burst into a fit of giggles. But none the less, he is showing that he has aspirations and goals so I will support him and smile at his growth.

Receiving the Money

I checked at 6 weeks and the money had not arrived but when we checked again at 8 weeks it was in our account. Curious as to how much we got in our account for 4 kids aged 7, 6, 2, and 7 months?

$2655.01

$2655.01 !!!!!!!

My husband and I put in $80 of those dollars with our monthly contribution of $10 each kid (x 2 months).  That is $2655.01 more than we had saved 8 weeks ago, and that money will only continue to grow monthly and yearly.

I feel pretty darn good right now, for finally setting this up for the kids. But I am also so thankful that something like the Canada Learning Bond exists and that there are people like the staff at SmartSAVER who work so hard to make sure this FREE education money is put in the hands of Canadian parents who need it most. They do so without the pesky phone calls at all hours of the day and they genuinely just want you to take advantage of what is available.

SmartSAVER Contest

SmartSAVER is currently having a contest right now that till the end of the year. If I could enter I would but that shouldn’t stop you from doing it!

You are definitely doing the right thing trying to save now. We set up an RESP when our kids were little to take advantage of the govt contribution but now that my eldest is in university it is apparent that even with that foresight he will still come out of his schooling with OSAP debt. Whatever you can do to save is awesome. great start.

I am encouraged after ready about your journey to learn about the Canada Learning Bond and RESPs. It does not hurt to enquire and gather all the facts to help you make an informed decision. It sounds like you and your husband couldn’t be happier that you did! It always feels hopeful to plan for the future, especially for our children. Mine wants to be a teacher, a doctor, an animal rescuer and a dance instructor! Now it’s my turn to do the same and enquire myself! It definitely seems like the process is seemless and not very time consuming at all, and of coures offers a huge benefit.

It’s a great way to start saving, especially with 4 children We have 2 girls and use there baby bonus every month for there education, still won’t be enough to put them all the way thru school, but a nice start.

  190. Lela S
    November 15, 2015 / 3:47 pm

While it will be a long time until the kids understand compound interest, the bonds will help with financial discussions (how much interest is earned, what’s the balance at the end of the year) so the kids can know the money is doing something for their future educations.
