siggi’s Icelandic Skyr Yogurt: Everything You Need to Know

siggi’s Icelandic Skyr Yogurt: Everything You Need to Know
This post is in partnership with siggi's. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

Last month I had the chance to spend the morning listening to Siggi Hilmarsson talk about the siggi’s Icelandic Skyr yogurt story and I am so excited to share it with you. After listening to the history of siggi’s, we got to watch the dietitian incorporate the delicious skyr yogurt into enjoyable recipes and I spent the morning eating up a storm.

siggi’s Icelandic Skyr Yogurt: Everything You Need to Know

The Early Days of siggi’s

When Iceland-born Siggi moved to New York,    he was homesick for his childhood traditional skyr yogurt. The American yogurt he found was too sweet and filled with artificial flavours and he set out to bring a little bit of Iceland to New York. After his mom sent him the recipe, he started to make it in his apartment.

It wasn’t long until he managed to perfect his recipe, decided to quit his day job and pursue siggi’s Icelandic Skyr yogurt full time. He made the move to a full-scale dairy farm and took those first steps in filling a void in a sugar-heavy yogurt market with his creamy skyr that was high in protein and had not a lot of sugar.

What is Icelandic Skyr?

Skyr can traditionally be found in Iceland but thanks to Siggi Hilmarsson, it is making its way over to Canada. The yogurt is made from skim milk and takes 4 times as much milk to make just one cup of this thick, creamy and concentrated yogurt compared to regular varieties. The flavour is milder than that of Greek yogurt but the texture is similar.

DYK: Mainstream yogurts can have up to 23g of sugar per 175g serving. siggi’s plain variety has 4g per serving and no added sugar. The flavoured varieties have 11-12g per serving and are sweetened with fruit and all-natural sweeteners like agave or cane sugar.

Although siggi’s does not have the organic or gluten-free designation you can be assured that it is made with all-natural ingredients and contains no wheat, barley, rye, or triticale, and does not contain gluten as a food additive in the form of a flavouring, stabilizing or thickening agent. Plus, siggi’s is kosher so it’s a great fit for most people.

Why I’m Choosing siggi’s Icelandic Skyr?

When siggi’s first started, there were not a lot of yogurts on the market that were not artificially flavoured and full of sugar. Although there is a lot more competition now, siggi’s continues to stay true to its core concept of high protein and ‘not a lot’ of sugar making it a healthy option for meals and snacks. The yogurts are made with 100% Canadian milk and contain no preservatives, thickeners, artificial sweeteners, flavours, or colours. All flavours and colours come from either the fruit used or the Madagascar vanilla.

The Versatility of siggi’s

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been swapping siggi’s into our meals. Instead of butter and milk for our mashed potatoes, we’ve put in siggi’s for the tangiest twist. Breakfast has become some siggi’s and fresh fruit. With its high protein and low sugar, it keeps us going all morning without the traditional sugar crash of popular breakfast foods.

While we were at the event last month, a dietitian showed us how to make easy apple pie overnight oatsmaple almond butter muffins and this delicious herbed green pea & feta frittata that I have made weekly at home. It is like summer in each and every bite and siggi’s helps make it creamy and tangy.

I grew up eating Skyr and I love it! My grandparents (Amma and Afi) were from Iceland. Our local dairy made great Skyr, but they went out of business years ago. My Mom made it from time to time and in the past few years, the stores here finally started carrying various brands of skyr. I finally came across Siggis Skyr a few months ago and it is so delicious!

Just had my first pot of Skyr and it shall be my last.

There was NO fruit in the pot and the yoghurt was completely tasteless and bland.

    Massive disappointment ?

why is there 15mg of cholesterol in one cup? I thought removing the fat would remove all or almost all of the cholesterol.
